Corfu

Summary

Corfu is a lush island with a mix of Venetian, French, and British influence with a UNESCO-listed Old Town featuring narrow streets, elegant mansions, and the Liston promenade, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife. It exudes aristocratic grace with its classic buildings. There are many places to visit and spend your holidays. Below I have compiled what to visit from ancient Greek sights, which beaches are the best, where to eat and where to go out!

Highlights include Corfu Town, Paleokastritsa Beach, Achilleion Palace, and Canal d’Amour.

Archaeological Places/Sightseeings

The old Venetian fortress: It’s worth taking a tour to learn about its history. It is where King Philip of England was baptized, there are British prisons and barracks.  You’ll find a magnificent view of the vast Ionian Sea on its outer point.

The center of Corfu: with the old town, the beautiful alleys with small shops selling souvenirs, restaurants and cafes.

Liston: From an architectural point of view it is an iconic building, a meeting point with many cafes and shops around.

Achilleion Palace: is a grand neoclassical palace with beautiful gardens founded by the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who wished to escape from the Austrian court. Elisabeth dedicated this palace to Achilles as she believed that he represented the very soul of Greece.

Mon Repos: The second most famous museum in Corfu, there you will see beautiful gardens with big trees. For a complete tour it would be good to take audio or a guide.

Spianada: One of the largest squares in the Balkans, this cosmopolitan square is probably the largest in Greece. You can enjoy a long walk in nature, admire the architecture and drink your coffee in one of the various cafes.

Best Beaches

Canal d’Amour: It is located between the villages of Sidari and Peroulades, on the northern coast of the island, about 32 km from Corfu town. I recommend going early to find a place, as it is a small beach. If you want you can explore by mask the caves that have been created along the channel.

Paleokastritsa Beach: Is a beautiful spot with crystal-clear waters and stunning cliffs. It is perfect for a relaxing holiday, laying around on the abundance of charming beaches.
