Going Around in Greece

Going around in Greece

In this article i will analyze the following questions:

  • How much does food cost in a supermarket/shop/restaurant?
  • What are the prices for souvenirs/shopping/tours in the country?
  • How is public transportation arranged and how much does it cost?
  • Do the locals speak English?
  • What sea/resort is in this country (water temperature, clean beaches, etc.)?
  • How much money does it cost to go there?
  • What about the people?

  • How much does food cost in a supermarket/shop/restaurant?

Going to the supermarket in Greece is no different than going to a supermarket in Europe, with the prices having increased. Nevertheless, it is the most economical way to buy food products and not only. If you are staying in a room with a kitchenette, it is the best economical food solution. In addition, there you can find local and quality products. The big supermarkets in Greece open from 9 in the morning until 9 in the evening. There are also the smaller ones that are not chains that stay open until midnight during tourist periods and places and have slightly more expensive prices than the big ones.

Restaurants or taverns in Greece usually cost around 50 euros for 2 people, depending of course on how many plates you get. If you are in an area like Mykonos and Santorini, calculate twice as much. There are some restaurants that are very well known and the prices are more expensive but there is also street food where you can have the well known souvlaki without having to pay much, this option will cost you at most 5 euros per one.

  • What are the prices for souvenirs/shopping/tours in the country?

In Greece you will see many small shops, which mostly sell local Greek products with good quality. There you find small souvenirs that you can take with you on the plane, such as oil, honey, spices, herbal products like creams, soaps and lotions and even furs. The prices are very reasonable and you get the best value for money. In big cities there are malls and big well-known chain stores like Zara and others.

In each place you visit you discover it on your own but I recommend you to take a guided tour, especially when you are in a coastal area. On this way you will have the chance to admire all the beautiful and hidden places that only locals know. Also, in case you are visiting a museum or archaeological site don’t miss to be accompanied by a special escort or guide for a more complete experience. On my site you will find tours suggested for each place that are very affordable and others more expensive.

  • How is public transportation arranged and how much does it cost?

If you want to take public transport, it is best to consult the official site, where all routes are listed directly from them for each specific place or more easily you can download the free app ‘’Moovit’’ on your phone for quick results. Please be careful to be 5-10 minutes earlier at the station. Also you may have to wait 10 minutes extra as public transport is not always on time. The ticket for public buses varies from 1 to 4 euros for local destinations and for long distances from 8 to 20 euros. Note that there are discounts if you are a student, unemployed, etc. Most of the time, you traditionally get your ticket on the bus. Roads and traffic

Many of the roads are not edged with pavements or walkways and in general are not of the same standards as in other European countries. Remember to exercise caution when crossing the road and when walking along a poorly lit road. Motorists tend to drive a lot faster than it is used to. Please ensure that children are under supervision at all times and do not play on or near the roads.

  • Do the locals speak English?

The Greeks are educated people. Not only do almost all of them speak English, but many people speak 2 or more languages. This is because we are a big and famous tourist destination and many people work in tourism. If you find someone older you can communicate by using your hands, a body language understood from all the Greeks.

  • How is the weather, water temperature, clean beaches, etc. in Greece?

Weather in Greece

The weather is hot in Summer, on islands occasionally windy and cold in winter. Generally warm and mild.

In order to help you to choose which clothing and accessories to put in your suitcase for your trip to Greece, we provide you with certain general information on the climate of my country! Greece’s climate is Mediterranean with long sunshine, mild temperatures and limited rainfalls. It is characterized by great variation, due to the country’s geographic location, the intense relief and the distribution between the mainland and the sea.

In the summer, dry hot days are often cooled by seasonal winds that are called “meltemia” while mountainous areas are cooler. Winters are mild in the plains with little ice and snow, but the mountains are usually covered with snow. In addition, it is a common phenomenon to combine different climate conditions in the same season (for instance mild heat near the sea and cool in the mountainous areas).

Few days before your trip, we urge you to seek the weather of the destination that you will visit, by searching through my webpage, where I have gathered useful links.

Summer heat

Serious health problems in Greece might come from the summer heat, especially in July and August which are the hottest months of the year.

Heat may severely affect people with heart and lung problems and sensitive skin as well, especially considering that in summer the temperature may rise to 40oC.

To avoid health problems in case of extreme heat, drink a lot of water, shower often, avoid physical activities, like walking, biking or climbing, wear light clothing and hat, avoid alcohol, wear sunglasses and sun lotion and generally avoid direct contact with the sun between midday and 4 o’clock in the evening

  • How much money does it cost to go there?

Traveling to Greece can be affordable or expensive depending on when you will book the plane tickets, where you will choose to stay, how you will move around and where you will eat. On my website I give you a lot of choices that correspond to both types.

  • What about the people?

The Greeks… we are loud, always in a hurry, but warm, compassionate and hospitable. We used to be delayed in our appointments and it is something common. We love food, and we cook in our homes everyday. We like nature, we take care of it as we spend a lot of time there. The summer is a big fiesta for us! We like going to the sea, spending all day there and leaving like free people. We much appreciate the quote: You leave only once!
