Precautions to follow
Your safety always comes first
Food & Water
Greek products are famous all around the world for their excellent quality.
In almost every place the water straight from the tap is drinkable. However, you should always ask the locals about it.
I recommend you to buy bottled water to avoid health issues during your trip to Greece.
Most Greek islands do not have their own water, but water is brought by water tanks from the mainland, therefore it is used only for showering and house cleaning, not for drinking.
Earthquakes
While these are very infrequent and unlikely to happen during your holiday, if one does occur, stand under the nearest doorway or under any wooden structure. Alternatively exit the building.
Mosquitoes
A few ideas on how to deter them:
- Turn off all lights. Mosquitoes are attracted to light,
- Anti-mosquito machine can be purchased from most supermarkets,
- Buy a cream or mosquito spray from the local pharmacy,
- If you have been bitten, the nearest pharmacy can help you by giving you a soothing cream,
- Do not scratch yourself, if possible, as this may cause an infection.
Your personal belongings
As a general rule, exercise the same care as you would at home. Remember to always take care of personal belongings.
Lifts
Children under 16 years must be accompanied at all times. Many lifts here in Greece have only 3 walls, the forth being the moving wall. Please ensure that you stand well back from this moving wall. Never smoke in a lift or use a lift as mean of escape in the event of fire. Please take notice of all the signs that have been put up in the lift for your safety.
Fire precautions
Upon arrival familiarize yourself with instructions and emergency escape routes posted in your room or apartment in case of a fire. Please take care if your accommodation is provided with cooking facilities – especially when cooking with fats and oils. Please ensure that all cigarettes are properly extinguished and do not smoke in bed. Please ensure that all gas and electrical appliances are switched off when not in use
Sunbathing
The best way to do this is slowly. The slower the tan, the slower the fade! Remember that although there may be a delightful breeze the sun here is very powerful. Use the appropriate factor sun cream for your skin tone. Limit your time in the sun and take care during the hours of 12:00– 17:00 when the sun is at its strongest. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Always cover your head when out in the sun.
Beach
It is very important that you exercise caution at all times when swimming in the sea. Many hazards cannot be seen. Please also remember that jetties leading out to sea might be in shallow waters so do not dive (jump) from these.
