Nymphaeo, Florina
Nymphaeo is a traditional mountain village, where you can relax and enjoy nature. It has been singled out as one of the ten most picturesque villages of Europe, according to UNESCO!
Things to do and see:
- In the building of the Nikios School, “Arcturus” was founded and operated, a one-of-a-kind environmental center for the protection of wildlife and the natural environment. The building itself is one of the three points of the Arcturus, where there are exhibits and informative video projections for more comprehensive knowledge as well as for the actions of the organization. There are two other sections.
1. The area where the bears are housed is in the village of Nymphaeon. This center operates a brown bear sanctuary in a fenced area of 50 acres of forest, reminiscent of their natural habitat.
2. The corresponding area for wolves, herding dogs and wild cats is located in the village of Agrapidia. Both areas are open to visitors. To see the bears you have to go in Spring, Summer or Autumn as they are in a winter hibernation. For more info please visit their site: https://www.arcturos.gr/
- The place is dressed for nature lovers who love walking. That is why I recommend the following hike.
Nymfaio – Asprogia – Lehovo(Paths of Peace)
Duration 4:30h, Difficulty level B+ (Medium). Altitude difference ascent 250m/descent 600m
The path goes through thick forest and agricultural areas. The use of hiking, trekking or sports shoes is recommended as the path of the guided tours is a forest path.
- At Lehovo you can also see the Folklore museum and the St. Dimitrios Church -built 1812.
- Another activity you can do is to visit the village of Sklithro for horse riding and canoeing on Lake Zazari. More info here and bookings get in contact with us.
- If you stay in Nymfaio you can easily visit the small cities for a day tour of Florina or Kastoria.
